Joachim Meyer, burgher of the city of Strasbourg from 1561 to 1571, took advantage of his presence to print there in 1570 a sumptuous fencing book: Gründtliche Beschreibung der Kunst des Fechtens. Its content is part of an old German tradition, but renews it from top to bottom at a time when yet Italian fencing is already carrying its influence throughout western Europe.
The quality of his work was such that it was cited by Italian or Spanish fencing masters in the course of the seventeenth century.
On the occasion of 450 years of this publication, two events are scheduled consecutively in Strasbourg:
– February 20-21, 2020: Conference on historical perspectives opened by Meyer’s book
– February 22-23, 2020: martial arts training based on the interpretation and recreation of combat techniques.
It is possible to participate in each event without obligation to assist the other, or to participate to each.
